Charter Itinerary
The charter packages are normally six or eight days fishing, dependant on flight schedules.
Morondava offers some great land based accommodation that can be arranged to accommodate flights.
We normally leave from Morondava early morning and fish en-route into the evening and arrive at the Barren Islands the following morning.
The ride to the Barren Islands is comfortable as we are travelling with the wind.
Once we arrive at the Islands, clients have a choice of jigging, popping and live baiting all around the nearby areas. We have very similar flats like the Mitsios where you get all species of Kingfish.
The drop-offs around the area are good for all Kingfish species, including Dog-Tooth Tuna, and the small Yellow-Fin are always around to catch on stick-bait.
The popping can be very good during spring tides, the best being 46 Kingfish on popper in one day. The biggest Kingfish caught thus far on popper is 36kgs. The biggest on jig was 58.7kgs and we get lots in the 45kg range on Bonita.
The Dog-Tooth Tuna were very good last year (2015), most ranging between 35-50kgs. I have a spot where we can catch them on popper and stick-bait, but most of the marks are jigging and live-bait.
There are lots of Grouper and Red Snapper for bottom fishing.
The sail fishing is good, but not as good as Mitsio. I think the guys you might want to bring here are the crazy jiggers and popper guys.
We get a lot of Amber-Jack, but we have not had any over 20kgs yet.
There are some big Marlin, the biggest I landed was 250kgs, but my clients don’t fish for them.
The fishing spots around the islands are very close and guys start fishing within half an hour of leaving anchorage.
Some of the guys have caught more than 150 fish on jig alone in one day. It is common to have an average of 600 fish a week.
The last day is spent mostly travelling to arrive back in Morondava.
Anchorages
After each days fishing we anchor behind protected islands, and there are 7 to choose from.
The islands are populated by the Nomad Fisherman, but often there is no one on them.
Season to fish
I find the best times to fish weather wise is April, May and June and beginning of July.
I will not operate November / December over there as the lightening is severe and the weather is unpredictable.
End of July, the yacht will be moving up to Nosy Be where I will run a few fishing and spearfishing charters .
